the root of a lot of conflict is the assumption that “society” is a single, universal, agreed-upon thing

what “society” demands of you, varies so much by the specific parts of society you’re in.

from the parts you were raised in, to the parts you currently hang out in on the internet.

who does and does not face discrimination for who they are, in “society”? that depends on the prevailing views in the specific parts of society you’re talking about.

what is “conventionally attractive?” that depends on the conventions for attractiveness that your specific parts of society has.

if you live mostly on the objectum parts of tumblr, all bets are off.

Because here, the term “conventionally attractive” is used almost entirely as an insult, aimed at the “conventions” of beauty that these parts of tumblr assume exist everywhere outside these parts of tumblr.

In most places, “what is conventionally attractive” means more-or-less “what will you not be mocked for finding attractive.” And in these parts of tumblr, the only way not to be mocked for finding something attractive is if it’s something as bizarre as possible and other people find it actually difficult to imagine how attraction to it would even work.

this confusion, in some parts of Tumblr, is treated like admiration for having excellent taste in objects of lust. all else is cringe.

there are “societies” on here where the conventional attraction is to flout any concept of conventional attraction.

Hipster horniness. Paradox of paraphilias.

utterly fascinating.

(this is not meant as a callout or takedown of this culture! It’s messed up, of course, but personally I love it. paradoxes are my kink. crash me, overload me, program.)
