when I catch myself thinking about how many good people have died, and how many bad people have kept living much longer than I expected them to…
sometimes i try to recalibrate my bias, by thinking of good people I know about who are still alive in relatively happy old age
It helps. Some.
but I’m hesitant to post such a list on Tumblr, because I’d almost certainly eventually get accused of “jinxing it” and “tempting Apollo”
I don’t personally believe in either “jinxing it” (“if you focus your thoughts on good things it causes bad things to happen”) or in the Law of Attraction (“if you focus your thoughts on bad things it causes bad things to happen”). both are baseless superstitions and often harmful to believe
however, at my worst times, I often find myself tempted to believe in a combination of those two things
(“bad things always happen no matter what the hell you think about or talk about”) (basically Murphy’s Law I guess)
Which is why sometimes i feel this need to count blessings as recalibration of bias
feel free to make your own list, privately, of the people you’re glad are still having good lives
