The smug tone of the original tweet is incredibly obnoxious and strangely accusatory. It implies that somehow those people who worked hard against Flock are just so foolish and quit the fight too early, and it’s their fault we now have subtle ones – when the reality is that those same people are indeed moving on to try to keep Axon out of their communities as well. No one failed. It’s just that the surveillance state is going to desperately keep trying to surveil us, because that is its nature. The struggle is ongoing.

I’m reblogging because this is useful info for activists and interested parties. But be wary of people who promote the idea you have failed simply because our enemies make another move.

🤔 I didn’t read it as smug. I read it as a heads-up so we don’t lose steam against this.

yeah.

regardless of how we may read the tone, the message is important:

in real life, you have to keep fighting. the enemy side doesn’t get fully defeated, ever. It’s an ongoing thing.

Like dishes and laundry. If you stay on top of it, you have mostly clean dishes and laundry most of the time. If you don’t, the dirt and mold takes over your home.

“defeating an enemy once, and then living happily ever after without further effort” is a fiction thing.

It’s comforting as an escapist fantasy

and I’m not gonna claim it doesn’t benefit some very large, very evil enemies that are also in a position to influence how the prevailing tropes usually go in fiction… *coughDisneycough coughcough -actuallycant stop coughing because of all this damn pollution and respiratory contagion etc etc etc*

but anyway. In real life the fight goes on forever.
