so apparently you can hide Nazis on Twitter by setting your location results to Germany or France because Twitter is legally required to remove Nazi content there, so Twitter always had the ability to remove Nazis, they just choose not to
fucking yikes lol
It’s high key illegal to make any kind of nazi joke or gesture in Germany. People can get fired for it and in extreme cases even arrested. On my class trip to Berlin this kid thought it’d be funny to do a Nazi salute in the parking lot where hitler died (was not a destination, just happened to walk by). He was immediately pulled aside by police who legit booked him a flight home for the next day, without the rest of us. He was suspended for two weeks too.
Funny how the country responsible for this takes full responsibility and fights to make it never happen again, while the US, who spent years basing an entire identity on fighting Nazis, gives them a platform to speak freely and draft members.
Don’t forget they literally came out and said if they filtered nazis like they do in Germany and France the algorithm wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between nazis and republican congressmen.
This thread is from before 2019 so I’m very sure the Twitter circumstances have changed A LOT since then
….but also? Even back in 2019, most people in this thread were putting a frankly terrifying amount of trust in the ability of a machine algorithm to 1. remove actual Nazi posts no matter how carefully they disguise their wording, and 2. not remove posts complaining about Nazis or reporting on Nazi behavior, on the grounds that they said some Nazi keywords
Have we learned nothing from the whole past decade of “machine learning” and its uses for website moderation? Are we fully trusting the AI now just because it claims it’s working against what we hate?
“the post said it works in Germany though!” okay, and how much did people research that, before jumping right in to agree with the implication that the way it works in Germany is so ideal that the same model can and should be applied to the entire US without changes?
Maybe in Germany the algorithm is heavily supplemented by human moderators being paid from government subsidies. Maybe in Germany there’s still just as much controversy about how this censoring process ends up protecting the people it’s meant to target and targeting the people it’s meant to protect. Or maybe none of this is even happening, or hasn’t been happening since Twitter got X’d.
I mean. I’m not claiming it’s even possible to research it and get any real answers. (The takeover of machine algorithms has fully enshittified that by now!) I could try, and I probably will! but I know I likely can’t even trust whatever info I find, if any.
But reblogging without even asking the questions? That’s horrifying.
