Sometimes I do ship something and it’s not unpopular its just that fanon harbors enough popular misconceptions to make the content frequently unreadable. So I will be like “can I have my ship please” and the internet will go “sure! here are a thousand results!” and I will go “is it actually my ship or is it some guys who are basically totally different characters in all meaningful ways that someone is having masquerade as my blorbos?” and the answer is yes often enough that I give up
I wrote out all these tags but I think im just going to say it with my whole chest
I do have some thoughts about this in regard to Tron characters
but I am never ever gonna blame any of this on the fans
because the canon consists of a handful of loosely connected storylines that have barely anything in common except the names of some of the characters. Every fan attempt at characterization is just some poor bastard doing their best to explain this whole mess and figure out what the hell happened in the missing time between when the character clearly established that he Would Not Fucking Do That and when he Fucking Did That
(some brilliantly creative efforts there, too! Really throwing into relief how there’s no such thing as out of character– anyone could do anything, really, given the right circumstances. And when canon forces every fan writer to brainstorm the most egregious circumstances, and how they warped someone in the most extreme ways imaginable – well, then there’s not really a right or wrong characterization, is there. Just many very different attempts to find order in chaos.)
