whoever bought the domain spidersge.org and had it go to a simple html page with nothing except the text of the famous spiders georg post:

Thank you. You are doing good work. Hope you have a wonderful day

I love it!

#also how did you even find this site op

#how can you even find it in the wild

LOL I mean i’ve answered this question before, but that’s like several thousand notes down and probably impossible to find now, so:

I found it by pretty much the only imaginable method anyone could find it: By having the idea myself, and looking up whether anyone else had done it first.

Someone had. So of course I gave them credit.

Funny quirk of the internet: If I had been the first to think of the idea, and gotten to do it myself– or if I had claimed the site I found was my own– I really really doubt it would ever have become the most popular thing I ever posted on this tumblr blog.

People love to reblog someone talking about someone else’s creativity.

People don’t care about someone who posts their own creative work. Our brains read that as “advertising,” and tune it out automatically.

(Which is why so many actual advertisers now resort to dishonest promotion in the third person, like a post saying “look at this cool thing I found!” with comments from others asking for a link to where to buy it, and then another finally providing the link– all of those accounts being paid to be part of the ad campaign, none of them admitting it. This is illegal most places, but it still happens. There’s no effective way to enforce spam bans.)

So.

If I hadn’t made this post–if only the original creator of the page had ever told anyone about it– I am sure it would never have gotten nearly this amount of attention.

You have only my word for it that they didn’t pay me to promote it. (I mean, that and the fact that there’d be no imaginable financial incentive to do so, because the site has no conceivable means of making money. But hey, I’ve seen spammers do more inconceivable things.)

Anyway. I’m coming to terms with the fact that “hey look at this cool thing someone else did” is always gonna be the most famous thing I ever said.

I do a lot of my own creative work here. Mostly fanworks, on this account. Original works on a different account, under a different name, much less noticed by anyone. The more “your own idea” something is, the less anyone cares.

Apparently, the most recent boost to this post’s popularity was a Youtuber adding yet another level to how far removed it is from being someone’s original idea.

So. If you’re here via Youtube, welcome. Your path to finding this was:

  1. a Youtube video mention
  2. of a Tumblr post mention
  3. of an html page reference
  4. to another Tumblr post (the original Spiders Georg one)
  5. which also wasn’t even the first. https://cowbirdsinlove.com/957 had an earlier example of the same joke, but it’s lost to the ravages of time, leaving only a ghost in the ohnorobot machine.

Which is part of why it’s important to still keep creating, forever.

Even if there are no original ideas– even if everything has already been done– yours might be the one that lives.
