getting my news from Tumblr is so unreliable because like. I’ll get news that’s not reported much in most media because it’s about some long-ongoing threat to a marginalized group and not about the usual popular topics. or I’ll get backstory and context that makes a more widely reported news story actually make some sense for once, delivered by someone who is actually good at explaining the topic in an engaging and understandable way. or I’ll get an amazing breakdown of a news story that I have seen mentioned somewhere but can’t actually read because paywall. Along with a link to an unpaywalled version. Or I’ll see things that are indistinguishable from some or all of the above, but on slightly closer inspection turn out to be entirely made-up, so it’s important to check the sources, but hell, it may be worth that for the occasional thing i learn here that no other site would ever give me

But the selection of topics can be pretty random

Of all the things people are talking about on here today, i would have probably expected this to be at least a footnote

text message to my friend in los Angeles saying "I heard that a bus crashed and then a news helicopter crashed while trying to report on it. Is... Is Los Angeles doing okay? I mean I know the road traffic there is bullshit but i don't remember it typically starting pileups that end up including aircraft." the message was sent at 5:51 this morning. it has not been seen or replied to yet.ALT

update: my friends in LA are okay

the above text message exchange but now there is a reply saying "Los Angeles is operating at peak chaos efficiency, we promise. <3"ALT

Also, the full description of the crash was “an SUV T-boned a city bus and then a news helicopter trying to report on it crashed into a warehouse lot, setting a few more vehicles on fire.” So far 5 people are reported dead, some more are injured.

So yeah i guess not newsworthy, by current standards. (Though it did make the LA Times.)

And the crash did not spread far enough to endanger my former polycule/roomies.

but based on my prior experience taking the bus and walking in Los Angeles, I can imagine that when the city does meet its eventual total destruction it could happen in one giant car crash.
