have I ever told y'all about how I found out I was a masochist through a christian youth group?

I mean. Okay. I didn’t find out that I WAS one, I found out what it was CALLED

the youth leader was like (I don’t even remember the point of the conversation) “do you know what a masochist is?” but like, He pronounced it mastochist. And he was like “would it be morally right to hit them even though they would enjoy it” or something, obviously wanting us to conclude that the answer was No

Which, terrible viewpoint there. Like, if you are claiming it is wrong to hit someone who likes and consented to being hit, there is no consideration to the actual Effect of your actions on the person, just some kind of, abstract “rightness” that is centered on you as the person doing the action

Anyway I was just sitting there like “Ohhhhh…So there’s a word for it…”

Churches had us doing all kinds of shit as kids and there was always something supposed to be important about it with Jesus or something, but I literally never remembered what the point was I only remembered the weird

In the same youth group we played a game that involved eating marshmallows dipped in mustard and putting panty hose onto someone’s head

I think some pastors have their real calling in a different kind of performance art (often standup comedy but sometimes something more avant-garde) and they settle for trying to shoehorn it into religion with some very forced connection to Jesus

My cousin’s pastor once did this entire comedy routine about how he wanted to name his kid Tim but pronounce it like Steve. could have been an actual funny bit. In a comedy routine

And then he finished it up by saying something ridiculous like “in the book of life our names are all spelled Sin, but god pronounces it Love.” like pretending this was actually where the whole bit was going, instead of just a tacked-on rationale for it being relevant to church

Free the religious leaders, they yearn for the actual stage
