I bet this has the exact same usefulness as a lot of garbage technology that claims to be able to identify things.
Namely: it can’t reliably read lips for shit, but it can convincingly claim it read your lips saying something, and it can get believed in court, when the case is just its word against yours.
I’m pretty sure the purpose of most of this type of technology is not “catch and convict the person who did a crime,” it’s “catch and convict somebody.”
anyone saying stuff like “I’ll be safe because it can’t read my lips accurately” is missing the point by a lot. If it can see your lips, it can convince someone it’s reading them, and then it can put any words it wants in your mouth.
