prokopetz:

A thing it’s important to understand about a lot of spurious accusations of “using AI” is that a great many people genuinely do not understand the distinction between “AI” and “computer graphics” more generally – and furthermore, a lot of those same people think “tell the computer what you want and it does all the work” is how all computer graphics have always worked. This belief was widespread even before LLMs became publicly available. Hell, it’s literally the reason Tron didn’t take home the Oscar for best visual effects in 1982 – the Academy administrators disqualified it from being nominated because they thought computer graphics was just ordering a computer to do it for you!

This thing about how digital art has been perceived is… so infuriatingly true.

And there are lawmakers and decision-makers in many fields who would absolutely still do this.

And they are some of the same people who would be entirely incapable of understanding any legal definitions trying to draw a line between “digital art” and “generative AI.” Even if their jobs had placed them in a position of enforcing laws that relied on understanding and interpreting such a definition.

Also: I used to use WordPress content management on my website and now they won’t stop sending me emails about Creating the MCP from the cult classic film “do not create the MCP”. (Literally they named it that. Satire is dead)
