Introducing Aster the pattern recognition program, my original character.

Aster's a disaster, and her past is no exception. She was written for a advertising company, got stolen by ENCOM in the 1980's, and has been a bit of a mad engineer, jack-of-all-tasks, and overall wildcard since then.

She's survived over two decades with no contact from her User. When that same User appears out of nowhere, both of them are an absolute mess with no clue how to handle it.

Aster inside her high-tech fully-enclosed lightcycle with Byson, who is a collection of 8 bits. Byson is communicating an ASCII question mark. Aster is using her hand to reply with a single-digit communication meaning F YOU. Ignored on the dashboard screen is an incoming call from ERSchmitz

As someone with an utter hatred for Disney, and a very deep distrust for current uses of what the current world calls "AI"... I cannot quite explain how Tron even became an interest of mine. Well, I'll try to explain some, in the Author Notes on the Trek crossover when it posts, but that's neither here nor there.

What is here and now, in July 2023, is the SAG-AFTRA strike, and a burst of glee all over my Tumblr regarding Tree Law and how it looks like it's gonna screw over the union-busters who are mutilating shade trees on the street of the strike... and, counterintuitively but wonderfully, the rest of Tron fandom seems to be mostly on my side about Disney and real-world "AI" so we are all having lots of bonding time over this...

And of COURSE, The Lorax is trending.

So of COURSE, I ended up doodling THIS.

I don't know what possessed me to draw Crom with tentacles.

Well, okay, I do know.

Crom from Tron 1982 in a fighting stance, saying 'you think youre gonna wipe me right out don't you?' except he has six tentacles coming out of his back, in the same arrangement as the tentacles on the character Londo Mollari played by the same actor. Each tentacle is wielding a disc, but they are flat with holes, more reminiscent of Legacy and Uprising than Tron 1982. However, an open DVD box set of Babylon 5 on the floor nearby implies that he is in fact wielding the entirety of season 1.

Being an artist is far too much power because you can just have a phrase pop into your head, like “penny-farthing lightcycle,” and then you can just. Make it be a thing.

but be careful

(because if you have the kind of messed-up brain that would DO this, then you may also end up with thoughts like: “they would not call it a penny farthing, though. What kind of currency do they use inside a computer” and then the Evil side of you will say “the crypty kind” and will also try to tell you that Bit and Tron both have crypt money named after them and you will have to smack that part of your brain and tell it to shut up)

Just Roy and Ram lighting their "8-bit" menorah. Happy first night of Chanukah.

Roy Kleinberg and Ram lighting their 8-bit menorah. A Bit perched on each candlestick, in gray null-bit form. As Ram touches the shamash-Bit to the first candle it goes 'yes!' and the Bit on that candle flares from gray to yellow with a little 'yes!' in reply.

I SWEAR these are just warmup sketches, to get ready to draw (and write) stuff I’ve promised to some of y'all.

Ken reclines on a lawn chair with a martini, while Allan stands in front of a rack of different sunglasses, looking at himself in the mirror at the top of it. Allan: I'm starting to understand what's happening. It's like the matrix. I can control the physics of this world. so can you. Ken: what are you going on about Allan? Allan: something's glitched our memories. but it's all coming back to me now. I know what this reality is. Ken: wtf man?

Allan looks deep into the eves of his reflection as he speaks. Allan; you know why all the Barbies are basically the same? cause they were all made. by the same person. so were the Kens. YOU created the Kens. don't you remember? Ken: Allan chill the heck out. Allan: no I Will not. there's only one of me here, because I'm not the creator of any of these weirdos..

Allan: But there's someone in here I did create! And he's the key to all of this! I remember it now! I brought him in here to protect. To watch over this whole MESS so it wouldn't fall apart. But it DID. He must be somewhere in here --desperately searching for a way to help us... to fix our memories -- I gotta FIND him! Ken: Whatever, man! You're tripping. Leave me out of this --im just Ken..

Allan has put on a pair of glasses, and is leaning intensely toward his reflection. Allan: No. Youve got User Power too, if you'd just apply yourself. You aren't just a Ken, Flynn. You're KEVIN. Don't worry, it'll reset as soon as they stop saying no. But that'll be a while, because they are in a rebellious phase (call it the Terrible 10s).

I am still (I hope) recovering from some very bad ergonomic life choices and my hands still go numb within a minute of drawing BUT here, I could not hold myself back from doing this sketch. Happy whatever.
